How Often Must I Have My Vehicle Smog Checked?

I received my registration renewal, which is requiring a smog certification. I did this last year. Will this be a requirement every year? Why do I need another smog test again this year. I thought smog checks are needed only every two years.

Is it possible the smog test you obtained last year was for the purpose of transferring the vehicle's title to your name? If yes... vehicles have to be smog checked every two years. The smog check required for a title transfer does not reset a vehicle's biennial smog check requirement. The odd or even number year in which a vehicle's smog check is due does not change.
