Passing the Smog Check with Cat Back Exhaust

Hello. I'm wondering if a catback exhaust would pass smog. I have a stock exhaust right now but it does not have a catalytic converter. I'm trying to get a CAT now. I'm registering my car this month and need to know if they are going to make me smog check it. The mechanic that is doing all my work is not around right now and he has my CAT so I'm scared that I'm not going to be able to pass the smog test.

Answer:

No problem installing a cat back exhaust system. The smog inspection does not inspect the muffler or exhaust system after the CAT. The catalytic converter, on the other hand, is inspected and must conform to your vehicle exact year, make, model and engine size. The CAT must be approved for sale and use in California and posses an Executive Order number issued by the California Air Resources Board. A vehicle will not pass the smog check without having the correct catalytic converter installed. The smog technician will inspect the CAT and verify it is designed specifically for your vehicle. Don't take you car in for a smog check without it.

If you are registering this vehicle in your name for the first time, it will need a smog check. If it is the vehicle's registration renewal period, it may or may not need a smog check depending on whether a smog check was requested and obtained the previous year.
