I have a 1990 Ford L 8000 and need to know if this vehicle needs a smog check or any components to operate legally in this state. My registration is good until Dec 2016. Max gross weight is 26,000 LBS.
I have had my Ford L8000 for 5 years and never operated it on the road but kept the registration current until the end of 2016. My question is do I need some kind of filter, a smog check, or is nothing needed at all? I'm selling the vehicle and would like to be informed on this before I do. When I purchased this vehicle in 2011 nothing was ever stated about any thing about a filter or smog check. Thank you.
Answer:
The deadline to upgrade your Ford L8000 engine to a 2010 or newer model engine was January 1st 2015. You can avoid having to replace your engine by reporting either as a low-use diesel truck or low-mileage diesel work truck.
Low-use will not require a PM filter, but will not allow you to drive the truck over 1000 miles a year. low-mileage work use will require a PM filter and allow you to drive your vehicle up to 20,000 a year.
No smog inspection (similar to that of passenger vehicles) is required. The CHP and ARB do conduct smoke tests however, which you should familiarize yourself with before selling this truck.
