Buying a 2001 Audi station wagon registered out of state. Can I register in CA without having to drive to California?
Great website. I'm a California resident, though for work reasons, I'm in New Jersey for the next few months. Naturally I hold a valid California driver license. I've just purchased a 2001 Audi wagon here in NJ; if I'm understanding your website correctly, I can fill out a Calif DMV statement of facts which will allow me to obtain a title, plates, and registration through the mail without having to physically present the car in California and without having to get a CA smog check. Is this correct?
Kind regards,
Ivan Answer:
For initial California registration your 2001 Audi wagon must be driven and
smog inspected in California. It's only for California vehicles which are
undergoing the registration renewal process which can have their renewal
documents mailed out of state. When buying a used vehicle out of state, in
this case yoru Audi, you must have a California smog check certificate
before registration can be completed.
