Do I Need a Smog Car When Selling My Car Out of State?
My car is registered in CA. Am I required to have a smog check if it's being sold to a resident of another state (they won't be registering it in CA)? I'm leaving the US for 6 months, but a friend of mine who does not live in California will be buying my car while I'm gone. I'm leaving a signed pink slip with my friend but not sure what to do about the smog. Thank you. Answer:
California's requirement for a smog inspection during title transfer applies only to vehicles being registered in California. In this specific case, the buyer will need to check with his/her State of residence for emissions compliance regulations. There is no "California" clause requiring you to smog check a vehicle which you intent on selling to an out-of-state party.
