Do I Need Working Tail Lights to Pass a Smog Check?

Do all rear lights on my car need to be working in order to pass a smog check only? I'm in Agoura Hills. My tail lights are not working at the moment. I think it might be a bad switch or something. I've changed the light bulbs but that didn't work. Thanks.
Answer:

A tail light inspection is not part of the smog check in California. You may pass the smog inspection even if your vehicle's tail lights are inoperable. Obviously we don't recommend driving without properly functioning tail lamps, but none the less, they will not cause you to fail the smog test. Just ensure, the check engine light (CEL) or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the dashboard is not illuminated while your vehicle's engine is running. The CEL and MIL are the only "lights" which do have an affect on smog check results. Also, if you're going to have your smog check done in Agoura Hills, remember to use a coupon from our site. You'll get the discount plus a free online diagnosis in case your vehicle fails for any reason.
