Toyota Camry 1999 Paid Registration Fees But Need Smog Check

Will I get penalized if I go past the month my vehicle registration was due if I already paid my dmv fees and just needed a smog check now? I'm in California.

Technically, yes, you can receive a citation for CVC 4000a(1) - Driving a vehicle with expired registration, even though you've paid DMV fees.
