Will a Leaking Radiator Cause My Vehicle to Fail the Smog Test?

Will my car pass smog check if I had a leak in the radiator and the low coolant light ends up turning on?
Answer:

Yes, a failed radiator can cause a smog check failure. The coolant light, itself, will not cause a failure, but a visual leak may. The failure can be a result of either a visual observance (leaking radiator fluid), engine emission output (smog), or both.

If the radiator is leaking fluid, the smog technician can fail the vehicle based on a visual defect. If there is no coolant leak and no visual failure, a faulty radiator may cause high engine operating temperatures which in turn can cause increased NO emissions. Nitrogen Oxide or NOx is created when an engine's combustion chamber temperature reaches over 2500F.

We highly recommend repairing any coolant leak fault prior to obtaining a smog check inspection.
