2003 Lexus ES300 - Failed the MIL Check Engine Light test due to failure to successfully complete all OBD self test.
Car is Lexus ES300 year 2003. Got my car smog result and it says failed the MIL/Check Engine Light test due to failure to successfully complete all OBD self test. Answer:
These Readiness Flags or Self Tests indicate that certain emission systems
which the OBD II computer has been monitoring have PASSED the test,
indicating that those systems are working properly. Your Lexus failed the
smog inspection because the proper "Readiness Flags" were not set. The
repair in this case involves ensuring the check engine light is not on, and
the smog machine is detecting the readiness flag also known as self tests
are complete. This involves driving your Lexus through 2 or 3 "drive cycles"
in order to set the proper flags. Drive cycles vary. They usually requires
around 100 miles and 1 to 2 weeks worth of driving.
Here's what we recommend: Setting the monitors require driving your Lexus
ES300 at least 100 miles. We recommend 200 miles; consisting of everyday
normal driving, stop and starts (like at red lights and traffic), ignition
on and off several times a day with at least 15 minute pauses in between
(this allows the EVAP monitor to run), and freeway driving at least on three
occasions for at least 15 minutes each at speeds above 30 mph.
With this all said done, and your Lexus still failing the OBD II portion of
the smog check which checks for incomplete or completed monitors, we can
only recommend a smog check repair center conduct a diagnosis of the OBD II
computer as to clues of why the monitors are not setting. Assuming no Check
Engine light or Malfunction Indicator Lamp is illuminated we have to suspect
your Lexus's only problem here is simply not enough drive time yet.
