Can I get a waiver or exemption on a subaru to 1986 vanagon conversion. Subaru made in Dec 1994.
The saburu is so much cleaner than a 1986 VW. OBD II on the japanese car will not read out properly. Why not smog check on the exhaust as it used to be? Smog referee has said twice that this car has an OBD I but after mechanic tested it has an IBD II. A Waiver or alternative method for smog testing would solve my problem as I already have both vehicles, am on a fixed income and can't afford expensive alternatives at this stage. I'm not trying to avoid the law and am motivated toward the cleaner option. Thank you for your consideration and time. Answer:
Unfortunately not. Since you have made an engine conversion to your Vanagon,
you must make that engine conversion pass the California smog check. There
is no exemptions or government repair assistance for motor vehicles which
have been modified.
