Do diesel cars need smog checks. I want to buy a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta with a diesel engine.

I heard there is a new California law requiring diesel cars and trucks to have a smog test. Is this true? And if so, what type of smog test does a diesel car need? Is it harder to pass the diesel smog check? The car I want to buy is a diesel Volkswagen Jetta.
Answer:

California started requiring diesel cars and truck to get a smog check in this year (2010). All diesel cars and trucks 1998 and newer, and weighing under 14,500 GVW now need a diesel smog check inspection. The diesel smog test does not include the emissions test portion which gasoline powered vehicle have to take. No tailpipe emissions are measured, and your diesel car will not be driven on a dynamometer during the diesel smog test.

Instead the diesel smog check will check all the visual emissions components of your vehicle. The diesel smog test will check the On Board Diagnostics (OBD II) system. And, the diesel smog test will include a visual smoke check for excessive black smoke (smoke), plus a EVAP functional test.
