1997 Toyota Rav4 - Smog Test Equipment does not get light(s) needed to proceed with test - readiness flags - monitors.
I have a 1997 Toyota Rav4. It doesn't get used much. I went to a smog test place recommended by a reliable car mechanic. When they hook my car up to the smog test equipment, the light(s) needed to proceed with the emissions test do not come on. I was told that the car needs to be driven more. I've been driving it to work plus taking it on drives as I was told to do. (I was told to use 3/4 tank of gas.) I've stopped at the smog test place a number of times after work but the emissions test equipment lights still don't come on. I don't know what to do about this. Has anyone heard about this problem and is there a solution? The registration needs to be renewed if the car is to be driven. If it's not driven, the test won't work and the car won't be able to receive a smog certificate. I'm willing to fix the car if it needs work. My son uses the car from time to time. And if I want to sell the car, I'll need a smog certificate. Thanks for any help you can provide. Answer:
Your best bet at this point is to have your Toyota diagnosed by the dealership. The dealer mechanics know exactly how to drive your vehicle in order to set the emission monitors required to get your vehicle to pass the smog check. They can perform the drive time on a dynomometer or on the street in much less time then we can. Once they perform their drive time, it will be more obvious whether the reason for the monitors not setting is due to not having driven enough or perhaps an electrical problem not allowing the monitors to set.
