2002 BMW 325ci passes emissions, fails monitors ready to test

My son's 2002 BMW 325ci recently had the check engine light reset and the issue causing it to be on repaired (misfires due to worn plugs). Apparently, this resets certain emissions test sensors that can only be reset if you drive a complicated drive cycle that we have not been able to duplicate. If we can't reset the sensors, we can't get the car smogged. I heard that we can get the car tested at a smog referee station. Is that true? How else can we deal with this?
Answer:

You can have your BMW tested by a smog check referee's office but it's probably going to be simpler to continue driving your BMW for until the monitors set on their own. We recommend driving for at least 200 miles in a variety driving conditions; traffic, freeway, city, stop and go. You'll need to make at least one trip to a store where you park the vehicle for at least 1 hour and then restart it. It's the type of driving designed not to require you do anything different than how we normally drive in California.
