They Didn't Tell Me I Would Fail The Visual Smog Test Part
My car failed the smog check during the visual inspection portion of the inspection because I have an aftermarket air intake installed. Why didn't they just tell me it wouldn't pass? I wasted my time and it cost me money. Answer:
This is in no way the fault of the smog station. Please let us explain. The State of California requires that smog check stations inspect vehicles exactly as they have been brought into them. The smog technician is not allowed to conduct any inspection before the official smog test begins, this includes visually inspecting the vehicle for non-approved aftermarket emission components. The State has put in this requirement in order to gather accurate results of the emission failures vehicles currently being operated on California public roadway may have. In fact, should a smog station not follow this strict requirement of inspecting vehicles as they are driven in, they stand to face a citation and fines.
