How Many Monitors Must Be Complete on my Toyota Tacoma?

How many of the emission monitors need to be ready or complete for my Toyota Tacoma to pass the smog check. Also I'm reading the drive cycle information and it says that the drive cycle needs to be completed 10 times. Is this really necessary? Is there an easier way?
Answer:

Your Toyota Tacoma must have the following number of emissions monitors complete in order to pass the smog inspection:

  • 1996-1999 model year vehicles will be allowed one incomplete readiness/emission monitor.
  • 2000 and newer model year vehicles will need all emission monitors in READY or COMPLETE status, with the exception of the EVAP monitor. An incomplete evaporative monitor will not cause a smog check failure. It will be the only monitor allowed to be incomplete on a 2000 & newer vehicle (as of the time of this post).
As for the number of times the drive cycle must be completed. Per Toyota, the 10 drive cycle procedure is required. Depending on which monitor(s) are incomplete, you may or may not need to perform the drive trace 10 times. If you have a scan tool, we'd recommend having it connected to your Tacoma's OBD-II Data Link Connector (DLC) and monitor the system while you are driving your truck. With each drive cycle, check the monitors for completion.
